Gutter Cleaning in Cambridge, Ontario
Eavestroughs cleared by hand, downspouts flushed until they run, guards fitted where the trees justify them, and the small leaks and sags fixed on the same visit. For the maple-lined streets of West Galt and Preston, the river-valley lots along the Grand and the Speed, and the newer homes in Hespeler.
Cambridge is three old towns with three old tree canopies, and the eavestroughs show it. The Norway and sugar maples along the West Galt streets off Blair Road and Salisbury Avenue drop so much in late October that a trough can be full again two weeks after it was cleared, and the river-valley lots along the Grand through Galt and the Speed through Preston hold enough damp through the year that moss, lichen and sprouting seeds show up in gutters that face north. Hespeler's older core has the same problem on a smaller scale; the newer subdivisions off Townline and in the east end have small trees and far less of it, and a yearly clean is usually enough there. This is the booking line for one vetted, insured gutter cleaning crew who works across all of it: hand-clearing troughs, flushing downspouts to the ground or the underground drain, fitting guards where a tree makes them worth the money, and resealing a seam or re-hanging a sagging run while they are already up there. Nothing is quoted from the street. Someone looks first, including inside the downspouts, and the quote is written.

Gutters in Cambridge: Trees, Rivers and the Freeze-Thaw
West Galt, Preston and the mature maples. The streets laid out before the Second World War in Galt and Preston were planted with maples that are now at full size, and a mature maple over a roof is the single biggest reason a Cambridge eavestrough fails to do its job. The leaves come down in a two- to three-week window from late October, which is later than people expect and later than most gutter cleaning gets booked. Clear the troughs in early October on a West Galt street and they are full again by Remembrance Day. The honest schedule on those streets is a clean after the leaves are mostly down, in November, and a second in spring to take out the maple keys and blossom that come down in May and June and pack into the downspout elbows. Where the tree is directly over the roof, guards are worth a serious look, because the alternative is three cleans a year. Where it is a neighbour's tree thirty feet off, usually not.
River-valley lots and what grows in a damp gutter. Cambridge sits where the Speed River meets the Grand, and a lot of its older housing is in the valleys that go with that: the streets below the hill in Galt, the Preston flats, the lots backing on to the river through Blair. Those properties sit in cooler, damper air than the plateau subdivisions, and a north-facing eavestrough in that air stays wet long enough for moss to establish, for lichen to spread on the outside of the trough, and for seeds that landed in the sludge to sprout. A gutter with a plant growing in it is not a joke; the roots hold water against the seams and the sealant goes first. It is also worth knowing that much of the old Galt core is in the Grand River floodplain and under the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulation, which does not affect a gutter clean but does affect how seriously to take water around the foundation on those streets. Getting roof water into the downspout and well away from the wall is the cheapest flood protection those houses have.
Where the water goes: downspouts and the City's stormwater fee. Since July 1, 2025 the City of Cambridge has billed a stormwater fee on the water bill, charged to residential properties as a flat annual rate that steps up with lot size. Unlike Kitchener and Waterloo, Cambridge offers stormwater credits to non-residential properties only, so a homeowner cannot reduce the fee with a rain barrel or a disconnected downspout. The City's advice to residents is still to direct downspouts to a rain garden or grass rather than onto a driveway or other hard surface, and that advice is good for the house as much as for the storm sewer. On a cleaning visit that means checking where each downspout actually discharges, whether the extension or splash block is still there, and whether an underground connection is taking water or has silted up. A downspout that runs clear but dumps against the foundation has solved half the problem.
The freeze-thaw, and why clear gutters matter in January. The Environment Canada climate normals for this region, measured at the airport in Breslau, put the mean daily high in December at 0.2 °C against a mean low of -6.8 °C, and March is similar at 3.6 °C over -5.6 °C. That is a climate that melts in the afternoon and freezes at night for weeks at a stretch, with about 160 cm of snow in a normal year and freezing rain on roughly ten days. An eavestrough half full of wet leaves in that cycle becomes a trough of ice, the ice backs up under the first course of shingles, and the result is the stain on the bedroom ceiling in February that most people blame on the roof. A downspout plugged with debris does the same thing on a smaller scale and can split at the seam when the ice expands. The fall clean is largely about getting the gutters empty before the first hard freeze, and in Cambridge that window is usually the second half of November.
Ladders, roofs and why this is worth hiring out. A two-storey Galt house with a steep roof puts the eavestrough nine or ten metres up on the gable end, and the ground below it is often a sloped lawn, a window well or a flagstone path. Ontario's Construction Projects regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires fall protection for a worker who could fall more than three metres, and workers on those jobs must hold ministry-approved working at heights training, which is renewed every three years. Those rules exist because falls from ladders and roof edges are among the most common serious injuries in the trades, and they apply to the crew that comes to your house. They do not apply to a homeowner on a borrowed extension ladder on a Saturday, which is rather the point. The crew brings stand-offs, ladder levellers for the sloped ground, and the training; the quote covers a job done from a stable ladder rather than from the roof where that can be avoided.
What happens to the debris. A season's worth of wet leaves and roof grit off a Preston house fills several bags, and it does not go in the garbage. The Region of Waterloo collects yard waste every second week, on the opposite week from garbage, from late March until the end of November or early December, in paper yard waste bags or an open rigid can with two handles under 121 litres, with no plastic bags and a 23 kg (50 lb) limit per bag. Gutter debris is yard waste under those rules and is bagged that way, left at the curb for your next yard waste day if you want it, or taken away. The City's own loose leaf collection runs separately, from November 2 to about November 27 in 2026, and is for leaves raked to the road edge the weekend before your area's turn, not for bagged gutter sludge. After the seasonal collection ends, anything left goes as garbage and counts against the bag limit, which is one more reason to get the fall clean done in November rather than December.
Yard waste collection rules, including container types, the 23 kg limit and the seasonal schedule, are set by the Region of Waterloo. The City of Cambridge's stormwater fee, its residential flat rates and the non-residential-only credit program are described on the City's stormwater page, and its loose leaf collection dates and rules on the leaf collection page. Temperature, snowfall and freezing-rain figures are Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981–2010 climate normals for the Waterloo Wellington A station. Fall protection on construction projects is governed by O. Reg. 213/91 and working at heights training by O. Reg. 297/13 under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act. Properties in the Grand and Speed river valleys may be in a regulated area of the Grand River Conservation Authority.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should gutters be cleaned in Cambridge?
It depends on what is over the roof. Under a mature maple in West Galt or old Preston, twice a year: once in November after the leaves are mostly down, and once in late spring for the keys and blossom. In a newer Hespeler or east-end subdivision with young trees, once a year in the fall is usually enough. A north-facing run in a damp river-valley lot can need a mid-cycle look for moss. The first visit settles which of those you are.
Do you clean the downspouts too, or just the troughs?
Both, always. Scooping the trough and leaving a plugged downspout is the most common way a cheap gutter clean fails within a week. Every downspout is flushed from the top with a hose and watched at the outlet until it runs clear; a stubborn one is rodded or taken apart at the elbow. If the downspout goes underground, the connection is tested and you are told whether it is taking water.
What does gutter cleaning cost in Cambridge?
It is priced on the house, not the hour: how many storeys, how many linear feet of trough, how many downspouts, how much is in them, and how hard the ladder work is on your lot. Planning ranges are on the cost page, and the firm number is in a written quote after someone has looked, which on most houses means a quick visit or clear photos of each side.
Are gutter guards worth it?
Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on the tree. A mature maple directly over the roof makes guards a sound investment because it turns three cleans a year into a check. Pine or spruce needles and maple keys defeat the cheaper mesh and foam products, so the type matters. A house with no big trees nearby does not need them. You will get a straight recommendation either way, including the option of guarding only the one run that always fills.
Can you fix a leaking seam or a sagging section?
Yes, as a minor repair on the same visit: resealing a seam or end cap, re-securing a hanger or spike that has let go, correcting the slope on a short run that holds water, and reattaching a downspout that has come away from the wall. What this site does not do is replace runs of eavestrough, install new gutters on a new roof, or do fascia and soffit work. If your gutters are past repair, you will be told so plainly.
What time of year do you work?
Spring through late fall, with the busiest weeks from late October into early December when the maples have finished. Winter work is weather-dependent: a frozen trough cannot be cleared safely and a ladder on ice is not something the crew will stand on. If you call in January about an ice dam, the honest advice is usually to manage the melt and book the clean for the first open week.
Will the debris be left in my garbage?
No. Gutter debris is bagged in paper yard waste bags to the Region's rules and either left at your curb for the next biweekly yard waste collection, if you would rather, or taken away. Plastic bags of leaves are not collected by the Region, so you will not find any left behind.
